Briarwood Pod

• What they offer / teach

Briarwood Infants (previously The Pod) is a specialist Early Years setting with 18 places across 3 classrooms, covering Nursery to Year 2. It delivers a bespoke Briarwood Early Years Stages curriculum developed from well-researched EYFS models, with a strong emphasis on outdoor play and learning, and works closely with a range of professional therapists. It is located on the Barton Hill Academy site with its own entrance, reception, specialist staff and facilities, and serves families in East Central Bristol and other areas of the city.

• Ages served

The setting caters for children from Nursery to Year 2 as an Early Years provision. Many pupils go on to Briarwood Juniors, another specialist setting, or a mainstream provision.

• Approach

Staff follow an Early Years play-based approach with intensive individualised support during the foundation years, monitored to ensure each child meets their full potential. The school works closely with professional therapists and builds close partnerships with families, signposting to services and supporting each child's learning and development. Transitions to Briarwood Juniors or other placements are carefully planned with families and professionals through the annual review, and the school's values are that pupils Enjoy their time so they can Engage and Learn.

• Admissions

Pupils offered a place must have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), and admissions are handled through Bristol City Council's SEND department rather than the school. The school describes itself as a supportive first placement for young children needing a specialist setting or not flourishing elsewhere, and welcomes visits.
