Side By Side Special School

• What they offer / teach

Side by Side runs a special school registered under the Department of Education, an integrated nursery ('Yes They Can!') for both mainstream children and those with special needs, and an after school club for secondary-aged young people offering activities, sports and life skills. An in-house therapy team provides Speech & Language, Occupational, Music and Physiotherapy on a 1:1 basis, in small groups and through classroom-based interventions. A Workability/Life Skills strand aims for children to gain external qualifications through ASDAN Programmes and Functional Skills, with work experience placements and job coaching, alongside comprehensive parent support and resources.

• Ages served

The integrated nursery serves children aged 2 to 5 years, and the special school serves children aged 5 to 19. The after school club is for secondary-aged young people.

• Approach

Established in 1998, the school provides an educational and therapeutic environment with tailored support, specialised interventions and comprehensive services, described as a community of warmth, love and care. The nursery encourages mainstream children and those with special needs to learn and play side by side with a high staff-to-child ratio. Personalised support is offered to both children and parents, with families kept informed and involved in their child's education and development.
