What to do in the first few weeks

The two pieces of paper worth chasing now, and the one thing most parents are surprised to learn about how a diagnosis is used.

Ask the team who diagnosed your child for the full written evaluation report, not just the diagnosis letter -- the scores, the observations, the recommendations. Ask for it in writing and keep your own copy. This is the document every later step draws on, and getting a second copy months later is slower than getting it now.

Then start a single folder -- paper or digital -- for reports, letters, emails, and notes of phone calls with dates and names. The special education process runs on a written record, and the parent who has one is in a much stronger position at every stage below.

A medical autism diagnosis and eligibility for special education are two different determinations. Under IDEA, a school team has to find that the disability "adversely affects a child's educational performance" and that the child needs special education because of it. So a diagnosis does not automatically produce an IEP -- and equally, you do not need a completed diagnosis to ask for a school evaluation. The two processes run in parallel, not in sequence.

Who to tell, and when

Your child's pediatrician, so the diagnosis is on their record and future referrals are easier. Your health insurer or Medicaid plan, since coverage for autism-related services usually keys off a documented diagnosis. And -- if your child is 3 or older and in school -- the school's special education office or your district's special education director, in writing, because a written request is what starts the clocks described in the later steps. If your child is under 3, the school is not the right door yet; step 2 is.

There is no national post-diagnosis service that follows up with you. Unlike a hospital discharge, nobody is assigned to call. If it feels like you were handed a report and left to work out the rest yourself, that is the system as designed, not something you missed.
